Jesse y Joy: A Night Filled with Cultura

August 8, 2023 | Nimsi Coronado

From Mexico City, Mexico to San Antonio, Texas, Jesse and Joy begin to near the end of this leg of their summer tour, as they kicked off the first day of August at their sold out show at the Aztec Theater. The venue introduced the night with powerful energy from Victor and Marifer, who are a sibling-based band, Montufar. When the lights went out, the audience was immediately filled with excitement as they hit the stage with their alternative style music. Being a perfect balance and taste of what the rest of the night would look like. Taylor Swift not only being a huge influence on their lyricism and music writing, but also an outscape for when they reach creative block, hence the cover played of Taylor Swift’s song “August”, with a unique touch of their indie style, like I had never heard before.

Following the talented duo, American-born Chilean, Francisca Valenzuela, another talented individual, gave the crowd a dashing performance with her alternative pop mix style. She instantly introduced herself into the night by striking a unique pose, with one leg extended out, all while singing and playing the piano. Her very expressive mannerisms and facial expressions set her apart, from the tilt of her head helping on emphasizing her words, to the finger twirling in the air. The exchanging of eye contact and smiles between her and the fans, as they swayed along and admired her while performing one of her songs on her setlist “Flotando”. A song about the feeling of floating and falling in love, that just empowered the love that was already radiating in the venue.

As it was time for Jesse and Joy to take the spotlight, the lights went dark, followed along by the backlights illuminating the drum set, of which shortly after the band joined the stage. The roar of the fans echoed and their screams ringing in my ears, that only grew louder when the siblings took over the stage. Hit songs like “Ya no Quiero” and “Tanto” maintained that emotion and energy that bounced throughout, being highlighted by blue and purple lights that also shined on their guitars. The chemistry between them, the band, and the audience was impeccable, especially during their song “3 AM”, as dancing filled the room, whether those who came with their family or their partner, there was no doubt it was all love in there. The anticipation began to build up as many were ready to hear their favorite , “iCorre!”, which was saved as a closing song for the night. It transitioned into a more intimate setting between Jesse, Joy and the fans, a few with teary eyes, and others singing at the top of their lungs. All to meet in unison with a wave of cheers when the last note struck. Officially ending the night in a team bow in the middle of the stage.

The sense of comfort at the Aztec Theater was very present, being a very safe environment for not only the Hispanic and Mexican people but also for those who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. It was a very warm feeling to have noticed the pride flag displayed on stage from the beginning of when the openers performed, and observing those with little details on them, from rainbow inspired makeup looks and clothing, to attending the concert with their partner. That feeling that was present as well within the crowd, as I had spotted a woman in the third row from the barricade waving a small pride flag, showing her appreciation to them.Joy not only being a queer woman as well, but striving to participate in that change to reduce and end discrimination, creating safe spaces for those who don’t have one and providing an experience and environment where that can be had. Of course with the alliance of her brother, the team and the opening acts, Montufar and Francisca Valenzuela.

It has been possible for Jesse and Joy to tour internationally due to their magnificent success. They have been nominated and won a Grammy for their fourth studio album “Un Besito Mas” for Best Latin Pop Album, along with six Latin Grammy Awards; Best New Artist in 2007, Best Contemporary Pop Album for their third studio album “¿Con Quien Se Queda el Perro?”, record and song of the year for “iCorre!”, Best Short Form Music Video for “Me Voy” in 2012, and once again for “Un Besito Mas", in 2016 for Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album.
